Seguin girls felled by comeback
A season of promise and potential turned into a game of “What if…?” for Seguin’s Lady Cougars Tuesday night.
After carrying an eight-point lead into the fourth quarter of their regional quarterfinal against Mansfield Summit, the Lady Cougars found themselves outscored, 20-7, in the final stanza and on the short end of a 42-37 final score at Mansfield Legacy High School. Seguin ends the season at 26-10, while Summit improved to 32-3.
Led by Freshman Alarie Mayze’s 17 points, the Lady Cougars held a 22-16 lead at the half and stretched it to 30-22 after three quarters. But Summit was able to rally in the fourth quarter and beat Seguin for the third time this season.

Amarillo 58, Lamar 54
The Lady Vikings (25-13) went toe-to-toe with a more experienced Amarillo team, but came up short at the end Tuesday in Burkburnett. After falling behind by five points after the first quarter, Lamar rallied and closed the gap to 31-29 at the half.
The second half went back and forth, but Lamar could never get close enough to beat the Lady Sandies (29-6). Brooke Grant led the Lady Vikings with 18 points, while Janay Keys put in 14 points and Hunter Woolridge 11.

Seguin 85, Waco 54
The Cougars (29-5) used a pressing defense to decisively beat an overmatched team from Waco (14-19) Tuesday night in Midlothian. After taking a 40-24 halftime lead over the Lions, Seguin erupted for 31 points in the third quarter to take a commanding 71-36 lead.
Greg Wesley led four Cougars in double figures with 19 points, while Kelvin Downs had 17, Brandon Parrish 16 and Chris Boleware 11. The Cougars will take on Fort Worth Arlington Heights (21-9) in the area round at 5 p.m. Saturday at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. Arlington Heights eliminated Keller Timber Creek, 69-44 Tuesday night.
Bowie 38, Odessa Permian 35
The Volunteers (16-18) used a late charge to surprise Odessa Permian (23-7) Tuesday night in Tuscola. After trailing for most of the first half and 23-19 after three quarters, Bowie rallied for 19 fourth-quarter points to take the victory.
Jeremy Senglin was the only Bowie player in double figures with 11 points, but Malcolm Hughes and Andre Yeku added seven each. The Volunteers advance to the area round to take on Amarillo (25-3) at 7 p.m. Friday in Vernon. The Sandies eliminated El Paso Americas, 48-30 on Tuesday night.
Martin 57, Midland Lee 46
It took four quarters to do it, but the Warriors (25-7) finally fought off a stubborn band of Rebels from Midland Lee Tuesday in Tuscola. Lee (13-19) stayed with Martin in the first half before the Warriors grabbed a 14-point lead in the third quarter, but the Rebels managed to keep the heat on until the final minutes.
Devonte Fields muscled inside for a game-high 25 points, while R.J. Salter chipped in 10. The Warriors will take on El Paso Hanks (22-8) in the area round at 7:30 Friday night at Odessa High School. Hanks stopped Amarillo Tascosa, 70-58, Tuesday night.
San Angelo Central 85, Lamar 65
Lamar got off to a fast start, but didn’t survive a blitz from the speedy Bearcats, who closed the first half with a 29-12 run and never looked back. The Vikings (12-17), had a 21-14 lead late in the first quarter, but fell behind, 43-33 at the half and trailed San Angelo Central (30-5) by as many as 26 in the second half.
Tommy Sing led Lamar with 21 points, while Shayne Allen added 13.
