UTA sees winning streak snapped by Weber State

From Wire Reports

OGDEN, Utah – LaMarcus Reed’s desperation 40-footer with two seconds left fell just short of the rim as Weber State held off a furious UT-Arlington rally to post a 72-70 victory Saturday, snapping the Mavericks’ school-record winning streak at 16 games.

With his team trailing, 72-68, Jordan Reves put in a layup with :04 remaining to bring UTA (20-6) to within two. Reed then stole Weber State’s inbounds pass near midcourt, but slipped as he attempted to launch his final shot to win the game.

Reves led all scorers for the Mavericks with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Bo Ingram added 16 points and 10 rebounds. Reed chipped in 16 points.

UTA took a 27-24 lead in at halftime, but Scott Bamforth hit four 3-pointers during a 16-4 run that put Weber State (22-4) in front, 40-31. The Wildcats extended the lead to 60-44 with just under nine minutes to play.

A Reves layup then ignited an 11-0 Mavericks run that trimmed the deficit to five points with 5:30 left. Kevin Butler capped the run with a 16-foot jumper, setting up the game’s dramatic ending.

Bamforth led all scorers in the contest with 19 points, including 16 in the second half. Damion Lillard tallied 17 points and seven rebounds for the Wildcats, while Byron Fulton added 11 from off the bench.

UTA returns to Southland Conference action Wednesday night with a game against McNeese State in Lake Charles, La. The Mavericks return to College Park Center next Saturday against Northwestern State.
