Martin, Seguin advance in basketball playoffs; Bowie falls

From wire reports

FORT WORTH -- The Bowie Volunteers boys basketball team accomplished almost everything they set out to do this season. Everything except one.

They never did beat North Crowley.

The Panthers used a 23-15 second-quarter run to take a 77-49 victory over Bowie in a Class 5A regional quarterfinal Tuesday night at Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center.

North Crowley (29-7) will advance to this weekend’s Region I tournament, to also be played at Wilkerson-Greines. Bowie ended the season with a final record of 25-9, with three of those losses coming to the Panthers.

Malcolm Hughes led the Volunteers with 17 points, but was the only Bowie played in double figures. Jeremy Senglin, the team’s leading scorer, was held to five.

Senior post Norense Odiase led four North Crowley players in double figures with 14 points.

In other boys playoff action Tuesday night:

Martin 68, El Paso Bel Air 66 (2OT)
It took two extra sessions, but the Martin Warriors made it to the Class 5A regional tournament. The Warriors tallied 12 points in the second overtime to edge El Paso Bel Air, 68-66, in a regional quarterfinal Tuesday night in Andrews.

Patrick Burke and Andrew Dotson scored 13 points each to lead Martin (29-6), while Nick Babb added 12. Bel Air (26-6), which had to survive a four-overtime game with Keller last Friday to get to this round, was led by Josh Gallegos with 15 points.

Martin joins North Crowley, Hebron and South Grand Prairie in this weekend’s Region I tournament in Fort Worth.

Juan Seguin 49, Lucas Lovejoy 35
Greg Wesley led a balanced Seguin attack with 18 points as the Cougars dismissed Lucas Lovejoy in a Class 4A Region II quarterfinal Tuesday night in Coppell.

Seguin (32-4) also got 12 points from Marcus Frazier and 10 from Chris Boleware. Lovejoy, the champions of District 13-4A, finished the season at 24-11.

Seguin advances to the Region II tournament this weekend in Garland, joining Dallas Kimball, West Mesquite and McKinney North.
