Seguin falls to Kimball, 54-52, in regional final

From wire reports

GARLAND – The Seguin Cougars were so close to winning the regional title Saturday, they could taste it.

What they wound up tasting, however, was a bitter pill to swallow.

After holding a five-point lead over Dallas Kimball with 2:45 to go, the Cougars watched the lead -- and ultimately the game -- melt away, in a 54-52 loss in the Class 4A Region II final at the Culwell Center. Seguin ended the season at 33-5, while the Knights improved to 22-9 and will represent Region II in next week’s Class 4A State Tournament.

Seguin opened the game on the right foot, as Greg Wesley slammed two dunks home to give the Cougars a quick 4-0 lead. Kimball responded with a 12-4 run, which ended only when the Cougars got the final basket of the quarter, which narrowed the Knights’ lead to 12-10.

Kimball’s backcourt carried the second stanza, allowing the Knights to extend their lead to 27-17, before Seguin was able to shave off a couple of baskets and stay within 29-21 at halftime.

The third quarter was Seguin’s turn to take over, and the Cougars took off on a 14-4 run to claim a 35-33 lead with 3:42 left in the third. That’s when Kimball’s Keith Frazier took an inadvertent elbow to the mouth and had to leave the game.

Without their top player, the Knights watched Seguin push the lead to 45-40 after three quarters.

The Cougars kept Kimball at bay until the 4:51 mark of the fourth, when Wesley fouled out. Seguin held on to a 52-47 lead with 2:45 left when Frazier returned to try and help his team. The result was both psychological and tangible as the Knights began their comeback.

Kimball closed the deficit to 52-51 with 1:20 to play and Frazier himself put in the go-ahead basket with 16 seconds remaining to give the Knights a lead they would never relinquish. Brandon Parrish missed a three-pointer and the Cougars were obligated to foul the rebounder to stop the clock with four seconds to play.

After a free throw made it 54-52, the Cougars last chance three-pointer bounced off the rim.

Cris Boleware led Seguin with 14 points, while Wesley had 13 and Parrish added 11. Trent Brinkley led Kimball with 15 points, while D’Angelo Allen added 14 and Frazier nine, including the most important two of the season for the Knights.
